Southbound to Cornwall

And we were off by 6.30 am - half asleep and drowsy though we may have been. I think I practically slept walked through our breakfast stop at 8 am, and did not start picking up until the much needed caffeine stop in Plymouth! But at least it was only a 3 hour drive, and I spent most of it drifting in and out of conciousness so it seemed to go reasonably quickly!

We spend a bit of time in Plymouth as we were a bit early to surprise James' paternal grandparents (his Grandma knew we were coming but his Grandad didn't as it is a surprise present for his 80th birthday on Tuesday). I'm glad we did because parts of Plymouth were really picturesque and it was a brilliantly sunny day over there. We did a brief walk round the docks, and then headed down to the coast. James and I made our way up the Smeaton's Tower Lighthouse. It was 91 steps to the top, so not very far, just some cramped spaces, but a fantastic view from the top balcony!

Halfway up the Tower there was a band singing sea shanties which was actually really awesome and gave the tower heaps of atmosphere!

The old bed chambers were so tiny that even I would struggle to curl up in one!

Then from the top balcony there were 360 degree views of Plymouth city and the coast.

At about midday, we made the final 20 minute drive over to Saltash where James' Grandparents live, passing over the Cornwall toll bridge.

After lunch and a bit of a catch-up, Sam and James' dad took Grandad out to a football match, and we went and checked into our luxury accommodation for the week at a private golf resort! Each of the bedrooms here has its own private en-suite! And most importantly, there are squirrels in the back yard...

Should be a good week ahead of us!
